A Riverside Walk in Windsor

Publié le 29 juill. 2020

With a trail network covering 25 km, the Parc historique La Poudrière de Windsor offers an ideal setting for a delightful nature outing.

Except for a couple of buildings and some remnants, there’s very little left of the imposing black gunpowder factory that would dictate the city of Windsor’s lifestyle from 1864 to 1922. The site itself, however, can be found inside its natural setting.

This summer, due to the present health restrictions, the museum installations, presenting the saga of this factory, are not open to the public, but the walking trails are still accessible. So, let’s take advantage of these!

The Grand Host of the Site: The Watopeka River

The star attraction here is the Watopeka River, an average size waterway punctuated by several falls and cascades. This tributary of the Saint-François river quietly reveals itself along the 5 km-long B trails. The path, with its rock dust cover and little elevation, leads to different rest areas. Take your time as you admire the landscapes while listening to the sweet musical sounds of the cascades.

At the end of the trail, you can either turn back or continue to complete the loop by taking the E, D and A routes leading to the welcome centre. You can also explore the cross-country ski trails which are open in the summer as well. Only minimally maintained when there’s no snow, cross-country trail runners love them for their rustic appeal.

The Poudre loop is another popular and accessible trail leading to what remains of this industrial site, again, by following the meanders of the Watopeka River. Many picnic tables invite you into the shade under the trees while you enjoy a bite to eat. Truly charming. Access to this historical park is free
